One of the issues with multi level layouts is how do you get from one level to the next.  One way is to have a REALLY big layout with really LONG runs so that the grades are not to steep but allow to gain the height needed.  Another way is to build what is called a HELIX or corkscrew track that winds around and around to gain the height.  That is the method we used on this layout.  The first helix was used to learn how to get what we wanted and is only a two looper.  That is it only uses two loops of the corkscrew to gain the height.  From what we learned on helix one we then tackled helix two which is a five looper used to gain 24 inches of height from the main level to the upper level.

On October 9th 2012 a major milestone was reached.  All of the roadbed wood work was completed.  Now comes cork and track installation, wiring, switch machines and lots and lots of testing.  There will be very little scenery work going on until we have a chance to really run the railroad for several months.  We want to find the bugs before we hide them!
